Admissions
Applications for admission to our graduate programs are accepted for entrance in Fall semesters. All of our graduate programs train students at the doctoral level. We do not offer a separate masters-level program; the MS degree is available, but only as one step on the path to the PhD. Students are selected in terms of their interest in pursuing the doctorate and the probability of their successful completion of that degree.
Application deadlines for Lifespan Developmental Psychology, Human Factors & Ergonomics, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and Psychology in the Public Interest are January 5th, 2010 . The application deadline for School Psychology is December 15th, 2009 . Note, this deadline is earlier than the University deadline! Please do not submit application before mid-October 2009.
Application
Applications to the Department of Psychology at NC State University require both a general university application and a departmental form which serves as your Personal Statement. The forms available on this page serve as the Personal Statement portion of the application. The forms are provided in MS Word format (.doc).
Main Application
To apply to the university itself, you must complete the on-line application. Requests for financial aid can be made at the same time. Starting with applications for Fall 2006, NC State has not distributed or accepted hard-copy applications. Although our program-specific Statements do take the place of uploading a document into the Personal Statement section of the main application, you will still need to complete the Campus Safety-Related questions in that section.
Personal Statement, by Program
The forms available at the bottom of this page are intended to serve as the Personal Statement portion of the application for admission to the graduate programs in the Department of Psychology. We appreciate your understanding that, although some of the information requested on the following forms is redundant with items also requested on the main university application, having your basic information available in an easily-accessed format, and closely associated with your goals/experience statements, is very helpful to us in reaching our decisions. We thank you for your help.
Please proceed as follows:
- Select the form(s) appropriate to the specific program(s) within Psychology to which you wish to apply.
- Download a copy of the appropriate form to your own computer. Each form is in a MS-Word format (.doc).
- Complete the information requested and include responses to any open-ended questions. The form should allow you to cut-and-paste from other documents you may have already prepared. (Use the TAB key or mouse to move from blank to blank.) You may, of course, save your work and return to it as often as you wish.
-
When done, email the finished form as a .pdf attachment (please avoid other file formats, such as .doc and .docx) to both of the following addresses: psych@ncsu.edu and psych_studentservices@ncsu.edu. Do not mail a hard-copy. There are many ways to go about converting your completed document to a .pdf, one of which is by installing special PDF printing software, such as PDFCreator.
- You will be notified that your Statement has been received and that it is in the desired form for processing. Note that the most-typical problem encountered involves Statements that arrive in unusual formats (e.g., conversions to .docx, rtf, word-perfect, or MS-Works formats). Please check that the document you will send has been converted to a PDF file.
NOTE: To ensure that your statement is properly filed, please use the following as the name of your Attachment AND as the Subject Line for your email: "Statement ProgramCode LastName FirstName" (w/o quotes or other punctuation). For example, Pat Smith might use the following identifiers to submit a statement for the Lifespan Developmental Psychology program: Statement PSD Smith Pat. Program codes are found on each Personal Statement form and are mostly self-explanatory: PSD (for Lifespan Developmental), PSG (for Human Factors and Ergonomics), PSI (for IO Psychology), PSP (for Psychology in the Public Interest) and PSS (for School Psychology).
Note: Although our program-specific Statements do take the place of uploading a document into the Personal Statement section of the main application, you will still need to complete the Campus Safety-Related questions in that section.
